What is allergy salute?

Allergy salute is a common behavior observed in allergic individuals, especially children who have allergic rhinitis, also known as hay fever. During this behavior, an individual rubs their nose with an upward hand motion in an attempt to relieve the itching and irritation caused by an allergic reaction. This behavior can cause repeated rubbing, which leads to the stretching and irritation of the skin under and around the nose, leading to redness, swelling, and a crease on the bridge of the nose. In severe cases, allergy salute may contribute to the development of rhinophyma, a condition that causes the nose's skin to thicken and enlarge. Hence, early diagnosis and treatment are essential to prevent the long-term complications of allergy salutes. Treatment includes avoiding the trigger, antihistamines, allergen immunotherapy, and topical steroids.
